FAQs: What To Expect When You Engage a Dietitian

FAQ - Engage A Dietitian

There are many reasons why you would require a visit to a Dietitian. Your first visit is usually prompted by a GP or Specialist Doctor. They may give you a quick overview of what a Dietitian does. In case you have more questions, we’ve got a few answers about what to expect when you engage a Dietitian.

Q: What Should I Expect To Happen At The Appointment?

Eating and nutrition are very personal to each individual. The dietitian will ask you some standard questions. These will include your medical history, medications, lifestyle (work, family, social routine) and exercise. This is to ensure the information and advice you receive is individual to you and your lifestyle. As opposed to you changing your routine to fit the nutrition advice.

Body Measurements
Depending on the reason for your visit, the dietitian may take your body measurements. This is completely painless and most often involves simple height and weight measurements.

At SSDiets we have highly technical equipment. This allows us to measure your body composition; percentage of fat, muscle, bone and water. Rather than simply using total body weight, it gives us a more detailed analysis of your improvements as you progress.

Diet History
Everyone eats different things every day. Everyone has different taste preferences. Every medical condition requires different nutritional therapies. When you engage a dietitian, we must discover the nutritional problem you or your doctor is concerned about. This is why our Dietitians will ask you for a detailed diet history. This usually involves asking you about your daily routine and what you eat throughout a typical day. This can be a very difficult thing to provide for some people. However, this is a key component of the process so your Dietitian can individualise your nutrition plan and goals.

Before you visit us, please download our weekly food diary. Use this to keep a record of your eating over a period of at least a week. Don’t change anything from your usual intake, just write it down as you go.

Q: Can I Claim For My Visit To A Dietitian?

Our dietitians are registered with all the private health insurance companies. Look through the “Extras” component of your health insurance policy to check if you have coverage. Each provider and each policy is different. We can’t tell you how much you’ll get back from the consultation fee. Although it’s simply a matter of phoning your insurer and asking about your individual policy.

The Australian Government has a program called “Chronic Disease Management (CDM)” (previously “Enhanced Primary Care”). This is for clients with chronic and complex conditions. This program allows clients with conditions greater than 6 months duration to claim for Allied Health services back against Medicare. This requires a special kind of referral from your GP to our team. Ask your GP if you are eligible for an EPC Plan.

Q: I’m eligible for NDIS. What Form Do I Need To Send SS Diets?

NDIS stands for National Disability Insurance Scheme. It’s estimated there are around 4.3 million Australians who have a disability. The NDIS will provide more than $22 billion in funding over the next few years. This will help an estimated 500,000 Australians who have a permanent and significant disability. For many people, it will be the first time they receive the disability support they need.

SS Diets are NDIS accredited. You can download our new customer form below and email, fax or drop it off at one of our locations.
